The information on this page is exclusively for those interested in auditioning for the 2008 Santa Clara Vanguard front ensemble section as well as returning front ensemble members. Please read all of the information carefully.

Auditions:

Anyone wishing to be part of the 2008 SCV front ensemble must plan on attending the November auditions. This includes returning members. Exceptions to this will be handled on a case-by-case basis. Please read the Video Audition Procedure if you choose to go this route. At the conclusion of each camp weekend, a list will be posted of those who will continue on to the next camp. The line will be set at the January camp.

Requirements:

Marimba – Competency with all major scales throughout the entire range of the instrument is expected; knowledge of minor scales and modes are not required, but encouraged. Marimbists shall play only the Stevens grip when four mallets are required. Auditionees will be asked to perform a short (2-5 minute) prepared piece using 2 and/or 4 mallets (i.e. a jury piece or work for solo performance/competition) of their choice.

Vibraphone – Competency with all major scales throughout the entire range of the instrument is expected; knowledge of minor scales and modes are not required, but encouraged. Vibraphonists shall play only the Burton grip when four mallets are required. Auditionees will be asked to perform a short (2-5 minute) prepared piece using 2 and/or 4 mallets (i.e. a jury piece or work for solo performance/competition) of their choice.

Timpani – A fundamental knowledge of the ranges of each drum, as well as the ability to tune and maintain the instrument is primary. Display of all proper characteristics of tone, balance, pitch control, and diversity of stroke style will be evaluated, in addition to advanced tuning is exercises (i.e. the ability to play scales, etc.). American set-up is preferred, but German set-up is acceptable. Auditionees will be asked to perform a short (2-5 minute) prepared piece (i.e. a jury piece or work for solo performance/competition) of their choice.

The Season:

Full attendance at all camps will be crucial to our success and is therefore mandatory. Exceptions to this will be handled on a case-by-case basis. Keep in mind that an effort has been made to avoid scheduling conflicts with most California and Nevada WGI regionals as well as WGI Championships. Absences due to any other winter percussion conflicts are not acceptable.

Weekly sectional rehearsals may be scheduled for those who are local during the winter. All members should be prepared for move-in by May 16th.
