Anyone wishing to be part of the 2008 SCV Hornline must plan on attending either the November Audition Camp/Clinic or the Texas Audition in December. This includes returning members. Exceptions to this will be handled on a case-by-case basis. Contact the SCV Brass Caption Head, Bob Chreste, at bchreste@scvanguard.org if you have any questions.
General Audition Information:
Students must bring all materials listed in their 2008 Technique Program and Audition Packet. In addition, please bring the following items:
TRUMPET players should bring their own instrument, a mouthpiece, a foldable music stand.
MELLOPHONE players need to bring a mellophone in the Key of F. You may bring a concert french horn if you intend to use it in your audition for the one piece of your choice. You must also bring a mellophone mouthpiece (NOT a french horn mouthpiece with an adapter). If you are not able to obtain a mellophone, we will have a few Vanguard mellophones available. You will also need to bring a foldable music stand.
BARITONE/EUPHONIUM players need to bring a marching baritone or euphonium and a mouthpiece. If you are unable to bring a marching instrument, we will have a few Vanguard baritones and euphoniums available. All Vanguard instruments are LARGE BORE instruments. You must bring a proper size mouthpiece. You may bring a trombone or a concert euphonium if you intend to use it in your audition for the one piece of your choice. You will also need to bring a foldable music stand.
TUBA players need to bring a marching tuba. If you are unable to bring a marching tuba, you need to bring a sousaphone. Concert tubas will only be allowed for the one piece in your audition that allows the use of concert instruments. Concert tubas will NOT be allowed in brass rehearsal. If you cannot bring any type of instrument, there will be a few Vanguard tubas available. You will also need to bring your own mouthpiece and a foldable music stand.

After the Audition:
You will be given a rating of A, B or C.
- "A" - Student has all skills necessary to be offered a position this year and is invited to the next camp where a spot will probably be offered.
- "B" - Student has most of the basic skills and experience to be considered for a position this year and is invited to the next camp for further evaluation.
- "C"- Student lacks the basic skills and experience to be offered a position this year and is encouraged to join the Vanguard Cadets.
The brass staff would like to stress that the audition process is not solely based on the individual audition. Some other factors are preparation for camp, improvement between camps, attitude, attendance, section ranking, marching ability, and physical condition. All of these together will be the determining factors for being awarded a spot in the brass section.
If you are interested in the Vanguard Cadets, please view the Vanguard Cadets Audition Information or inquire directly to the Vanguard Cadets Brass Caption Manager, Mr. Steve Barnhill, by email at barnhills@esuhsd.org for more information.
